Understanding the Two Main FSSAI Categories

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) divides food businesses into three registration categories based primarily on annual turnover. For most small and medium businesses, the confusion lies between Basic Registration and the State License.

Basic Registration (Turnover up to ₹12 Lakh)

Basic Registration is the simplest and most affordable option. If your annual food business turnover is ₹12 lakh or less, this is the category you fall into. The application is made on Form A and the government fee is just ₹100 per year.

This covers small vendors, home-based food sellers, petty retailers, and local hawkers. The process is straightforward and typically completed within 7–10 working days.

State License (Turnover ₹12 Lakh to ₹20 Crore)

Once your turnover crosses ₹12 lakh, you must upgrade to a State License. This applies to medium-sized restaurants, food manufacturers, storage facilities, and transporters operating within a single state.

The application is made on Form B and government fees range from ₹2,000 to ₹5,000 per year depending on your business type. Processing takes 15–30 working days.
