Do Home-Based Food Businesses Need FSSAI?
Yes. If you are selling food from your home — whether it is cakes, snacks, pickles, tiffin services or any other food product — you are required to obtain FSSAI registration. There is no exemption for home-based operations.
Basic Registration is Usually Enough
Most home-based food businesses have an annual turnover well under ₹12 lakh, which means Basic Registration is the appropriate category. The government fee is ₹100 per year and the application can be filed online through the FoSCoS portal.
Even if your turnover is very small, registration is still mandatory. Operating without it is a violation of the Food Safety and Standards Act.

Additional Considerations for Home Bakers
If you are selling packaged food products, you may also need to comply with labelling and packaging requirements under FSSAI regulations. This includes having a proper label with the FSSAI logo, license number, ingredient list, nutritional information, and best-before date.
